There are a total of 3 sessions in a year.
- Fall~Winter Session (closely follows the start and end of one school semester)
- Spring Session
- Summer Session
- During the school year, there are limited spaces of lessons times due to time constraints.
- During the summer, scheduling naturally becomes more flexible and lessons times can be accommodated to fit your child’s summer activity schedules and family vacation times.
- At the end of each session I will give out a progress report to the parents and this will be a good time to discuss whether the parents/students have any concerns or requests.
Performance Opportunities
There is an annual recital I require all of my students to perform. This will be time of celebration and a time to share with everyone their achievements and more importantly provide a higher level of stage experience. Parents can also use this time to gauge their child’s progress. There are also other competitive and uncompetitive recitals/festivals/competitions I encourage my students to partake.
Monthly Tuition Fees: (Lessons fees are due at the start of every month during the first lesson time.)
1. For the 1st student:
45 minutes lessons ($65/45 minute lesson)
- $260 in a 4 week month
- $320 in a 5 week month
Two or more students in the same family will receive a monthly $20 discount for each additional student.
Parental Participation
I strongly encourage active participation of parents in their child’s learning (from ages 7~9) of the violin. Parents are always welcome to sit in their child’s lesson. Involvement will allow parents to take a more active role in your child’s practice session and help facilitate faster learning of concepts learned through the lessons. However after 1~2 years I encourage independent learning/practice and recommend parents not to sit in after a certain level is achieved.
Practicing:
Establishing good practicing habits from the beginning is important. It will provide a good foundation of discipline and a sense of responsibility. Although it cannot be forced, both the student and parents along with the teacher can work out and find a good solution to make piano more enjoyable.
It is very important to spend time practicing on learned concepts and techniques from the violin lesson. Although quantity does not dictate quality, there is a greater amount of practice time is needed especially when starting out. A greater parental involvement is needed in this stage. I encourage active involvement of parents of young children especially between the age 7~9 (elementary school years) to provide reinforcement of concepts and techniques during practice time.
Most students who start violin lessons are very excited and eager to learn. After a few weeks to months the child will realize that playing the violin is sometimes not all fun but more practice and hard work. It is during these times the role of a teacher and parent becomes important. Parents should encourage the students to keep working at it as with any hurdles in life they must overcome. With small steps students will they realize at some point they can play a whole piece by themselves and have a sense of accomplishment and pride. Playing at recitals and other public places will further instill a sense of confidence and serve as a motive to take on harder pieces while enjoying the challenge.
Is my child ready to play the violin?
While students can start as early as ages 6, I encourage the children to learn the piano for at least 6 months ~ 1 year so that they can train their ear to recognize proper intonation and understand musical concepts/theory. Young children especially need this training because the violin has a different set of skills needed such as finding the correct pitch on the “unfretted” violin string and the need for good hand coordination when playing the notes with the bow.
Missed Lessons – Excused vs. Unexcused
Due to unforseen circumstances, I will excuse 1 “unexpected cancellation” of violin lessons every semester. Cancellation of lessons less than 24 hours notice count as unexcused – “unexpected cancellations”. For all “unexcused cancellation”, the student will be charged for the lesson and no make-up lesson will be given. Cancellation of lessons due to inclement weather, sudden illnesses and emergencies are considered excused – as long as notifications are given before 10:00 am lesson day. Make-up lessons will be created if schedule permits. If make-up lessons are not possible, the unused lesson fee will become a credit to next month’s tuition fee.
I will allow up to 2 cancellations of violin lessons for every semester providing there is at least 24 hours notice. Make-up lessons and rescheduling will also depend on availability.
If a student wishes to stop taking lessons, I require a one month advanced notice so that I can open the spot for another prospective student.
Holidays
There will be no lessons during the major holidays unless requested: New Years Eve/Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve/Day. As for the other holidays, lessons will continue unless cancellations are prearranged with the student (parent) and teacher.
